You should have received a flyer with a Partnership in Education (PIE) Card from Jiffy Lube. Each time you have your oil changed ask them to scan the bar code on the card. Poinciana will receive $3 each time the card is scanned, and you will get 25% off.

Poinciana Brings Home Science Winners in Two Events!

Poinciana Elementary, a STEM magnet elementary school, proves its Science, Technology, Engineering and Math expertise with several extraordinary student awards at end of year events.

Poinciana had three overall winners in the 2013 Palm Beach County District Science Fair:

3rd Grader Coleman Longwater won third place overall for his project on Magnets in Different Temperatures
3rd Grader Anastasia McInerney won third place overall for her project on Saving Money by Eating In instead of Going Out
Ms. McFarlane’s First Grade Class won 2nd place overall for the class project on Girls vs. Boys and Bowling skills

Poinciana Elementary STEM Magnet School’s Afterschool Science club PANDAMONIUM competed in the 1st Annual Science Olympiad hosted Sat. May 11 by Florida Atlantic University.

Poinciana Elementary earned four awards from out of 11 competitive events ranging from engineering projects, to academic games.

1st Place Winners in “Energy Lab” - A test on how far a self-designed, small solar powered vehicle would travel
2nd Place Winners for “A is for Anatomy” – An academic game where the team took a test and answered 40 questions about the human body and organs
2nd Place Winners in “Tennis Ball Catapult” – The team had to design and build acatapult and send tennis balls closest to target
and 2nd Place Winners in “Bridge Building” - The team had 50 straws and 40 cm. of tape for building and had to support weights

Team members included 3rd, 4th and 5th graders: Ethan Gabay, Louis Lee, Kira Lichtenfeld, Jimena Machorro, Mikayla Perry, Kara Wilson, Ethan Wong, Kristha Zapata-Palacios, Teacher, Lisa Saunders, and Coach, Gloria Gibson

Human Growth & Development Curriculum

The presentation provides parents with background information, data and facts supporting the need for this curriculum. District Math & Science Fair

The District Math and Science Fair takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday this week at the Expo Center at the South Florida Fairgrounds. The public may attend on Tuesday from 9:00am – 7:00pm and on Wednesday from 9:00 – noon.

Wednesday, May 1st is the last SAC meeting for this school year. This will be a voting meeting so it’s very important that there is a quorum. If you are a voting member of the SAC please try to attend. The meeting will take place at 5:30 in the Media Center.

Updated Information Regarding Payments by Check

As of April 15th, the cafeteria is no longer accepting checks for prepayments. Prepayments will still be accepted in cash, as well as online.

Other payments to the school can be made by check until May 10th. After that date payments must be made in cash, by money order, or online.
